A COMMUNITY WHERE EVERYONE BELONGS

A child’s worth never depends on a math answer.

Unconditional acceptance gives children room to ask, explain, try again, and support someone else.

Begin with agape

Agape is unconditional, compassionate love. It is the foundation of Math With Meaning: children are valued exactly as they are, regardless of performance, mistakes, or test scores.

“I accept you and value you exactly as you are.”

My goal is to ease the fear, pressure, and perfectionism that can surround elementary mathematics. Belonging gives students a place to begin; high expectations and thoughtful support help them grow.

Belonging shows up in daily routines

1

Make the first step accessible

Begin review with an approachable question. Offer entry points through music, movement, drawing, writing, and discussion.

2

Make help part of learning

Build partner conversations and peer tutoring into the routine. Students have opportunities to give support and receive it.

3

Listen, repair, and reconnect

Use circles and restorative practices to support participation and relationships. Invite every child’s voice and work through disagreements with care.

4

Welcome revision

Treat mistakes as opportunities to think again. Ask students what they noticed, what changed, and why their new thinking makes sense.

Math practices in action

A supportive community helps students participate, explain their reasoning, and persevere. The mathematical practices become visible in what students actually say, represent, and do.

Building confidence through connection.
