SONGS & RESOURCES
Sing it. Move it. Make sense of it.
Songs invite students into mathematics. Discussion, models, and application give those memorable words meaning.

Start with a Song
We make songs for any content the students need to memorize
In my classroom, we sing and move every day. Songs grow from what students need, and children can help write them. You do not have to be a musician to start with something simple.
Students who can recall math
Multiplitoons
Multiplitoons is my multisensory multiplication method. It pairs visual, auditory, and movement experiences to support fact recall after students have explored what multiplication means.
Begin with manipulatives, then representations, then abstract symbols. I recommend introducing Multiplitoons toward the end of grade three or the beginning of grade four, when students have had ample conceptual work.
Songs support recall; they work alongside flexible thinking, number relationships, and conceptual learning.
Created with students, with an alliteration mini-lesson woven in.
Ask: What would happen if each digit moved to the tens place? Which pairs would make 100? What about the hundreds place?
Invite students to create movements and explain why the new pairs total 100.
Math practices in action
The place-value discussion can make quantities and structure visible (MP2 and MP7). Singing alone is not evidence of a mathematical practice.
